My take on this - we all have opinions! - is the LONG DAYS JOURNEY INTO NIGHT is without question the greatest American play ever written. I always recall that O'Neill wrote this late in life, but from the POV of who he as when the action of the play takes place. Unlike what he assumed at the time of the action of the play, O'Neill did not die of TB, and his mother DID kick her drug addiction.
Greatest play of 20th Century, for me, is a close run thing - but I rate THE THREE SISTERS as best play of the 20th Century, followed closely by UNCLE VANYA. |
