Michael, thanks for your post. One question though - as far as one can "cite...yearning" in a song such as "Why Can't I" (one of my favorite Rodgers and Hart songs, btw), isn't it also a bit presumptuous to assume that a musical theatre lyricist is writing about himself? Of course there's always the "write from your own experience" path, but shouldn't a writer just be able to write for the characters in the shows as opposed to the songs being about themselves? It's easy to suggest that Hart was channeling himself, certainly in his saddest songs, but is that really being fair to him and his talent? | |
