Then we COMPLETELY agree. If every character were a mirror of the playwright's mind, there would be no conflict. We writers try to live in the psyche of different characters, imagine divergent points of view. But there are certain songs that are more personal to us. Oddly enough, the next show I'm writing for Urban Stages is CAST OF CHARACTERS, in which I'm presenting the wide range of characters from my own musicals (I've written shows for the Winter Rhythms series for the last six years and am now their Vice-President). There is a point where the characters do have a life of their own and seem to speak for themselves. As do the themes of diverse musicals. I've been the lyricist on both a popular Christmas musical (LUDLOW LADD) and Jewish-themed shows (FIRST FAMILY OF SECOND AVENUE). I'm Jewish, but my maternal family were Southern Jews and we celebrated everything. I've also written a popular musicals about adoption, THEY CHOSE ME!, even though I'm not either adopted or an adoptive parent. But I can create a mindset, sometimes drawing from related personal experiences (like loneliness, parental love, etc.)- Michael Colby
