I was in the rear mezz and you could hear the gasps when they announced Fisher would not be at the performance, but the audience rallied and applauded when the understudy was named --I'm sorry I don't remember who it was. One young woman said to me, "You don't want him to be waiting to go on backstage and just hear a disappointed audience." The understudy was remarkable in knowing key steps and moments in the show, he never faltered, and while he didn't have Fisher's pipes, Run Freedom Run still stopped the show. I heard some people discussing "Who was the understudy, was it officer Lockstock?" as I walked out, so I don't think people were feeling too disappointed. (Although that comment was odd because Greg Hildreth, who I didn't know, was superb as Lockstock.) But the best thing was the hand everyone on stage gave to the understudy. I've seen casts applaud understudies the first time they go on many times, but this was a joyous celebration, almost a "Hoorah! We're so proud of you! You did it!" It was exhilarating to see. | |
