''Greg Kinnear, yet to take over the role he'd actually never really play on Broadway, was out and Christopher Innvar went on for Atticus'' Greg Kinnear was announced to take over the role of Atticus Finch in ''To Kill a Mockingbird'' on Jan. 5, 2022, and there is video of him taking his first curtain call. The following morning, Kinnear did a segment on the ''Today'' show (below) about making his Broadway debut, which he called ''exhilarating'' and said the rehearsals had been ''a ball.'' There's also a Reddit post, dated Jan. 7, 2022, that says Christopher Innvar was playing Finch instead. So did Kinnear just do two performances and then bow out? Was the role too daunting? This was not only Kinnear's Broadway debut, but his professional stage debut. Did he ever return to the show? IBDB.com, which can be wrong, lists Kinnear's dates as Jan. 5, 2022-Jan. 16, 2022. But ''Mockingbird'' simply closed Jan. 16, 2022, and it was announced that it would return June 1 at the Belasco, with Kinnear. Then in late July, it was reported that ''Mockingbird'' wouldn't be returning; Aaron Sorkin said the decision was due to Scott Rudin, who felt the [post-COVID climate] was ''too risky.'' (I had seen Jeff Daniels in ''Mockingbird,'' but must admit that I was even more impressed by the play and national tour, starring Richard Thomas.) |
