Memorable understudy experience:

I've had a slew of them, and the ones during the first re-opening after the shutdown were uniformly memorable. And masked and vaccinated audiences were extraordinary in response. But the one that stuck with me was at the ebbing Mockingbird on a frigid Saturday afternoon in January. Greg Kinnear, yet to take over the role he'd actually never really play on Broadway, was out and Christopher Innvar went on for Atticus opposite the understudy for Tom Robinson, Yaegel T. Welch. Yes, that play with two men on in the defining roles. And it was as if I'd never heard the story, let alone seen the play. A day like few others in the theater, because the absence of star performers meant that Harper Lee's worldbuilding (with an admirable assist from Sorkin) was center stage. Innvar burrowed deeply into Finch, creating a quiet, charismatic southern man with grace and tamped down power. When he unleased his moral outrage, it was in carefully modulated doses, sans histrionics. And masterful. Because of the stars being out, I picked up 5th row center orchestra seats at the box office for TKTS prices. My feet were iced over but it was an afternoon of unprecedented theatrical heat. Unforgettable.
