Understudy highlights: Going on in Schoolhouse Rock Live at the Atlantic in 1995. I also worked as a bus boy at a restaurant and there were no cell phones so when I checked my voice mail (a special number you pay for to record messages for you) after work, I had 8 messages saying “you might go on today” to “you’re going on” to “where are you?!?” I was covering all three men in the show and had a preparation folder for each character. I ran home, grabbed my folder, and got to the theater. It was going really well until the middle of the very last song (The Tale of Mr Morton, my favorite in the show) and I just froze unable to remember the next line of the song. I just stood there. It was 30 years ago so I don’t remember exactly what happened next. I just remember freezing. Going on in Babes in Arms at the Guthrie opposite an unknown Kristin Chenoweth. I was excited for this one because it was obvious she was about to become a big star. At one point, there was a break in the dialogue and I thought “oh god what now?” until I realized it wasn’t me! Another actor forgot HIS line! Another memory is everyone laughing at my lines when I wasn’t trying to be funny, I was just trying to survive. I thought “way to go Ken Lazebnik for writing a funny script!” Also- another thing- it was so weird to see the person playing my usual role while I was playing a different role. Felt like the end of Back to the Future 2 where Marty McFly sees himself from the first movie. And going on as Simon in 2000 revival of JCS. I had to climb up to the top of this big set before singing my solo. I was terrible. I was cracking and it was bad. In the aftermath, I realized it was because I was out of breath. So the next time I went on, I made sure I was breathing on my way up the set and I was much better. |
