It was said at the time that Kinnear tested positive for COVID after his first two shows, and I think at that time, he would have had to have sat out for the next 10 days. This all happened in Jan 2022, when the Omicron variant was raging, and several Broadway shows were closing or intending a pause. Apparently, even though Rudin had stepped away from active producing at this point, he still held the rights and refused to let the show re-open later. He obviously knows more than I do about the right path here, but I thought that was a strange choice given how well the show had been doing pre-pandemic. It looks like Aaron Sorkin and Bartlett Sher also thought it was a strange decision, as you can see in the linked article. On an unrelated note, I would have liked to have seen Christopher Innvar in this role. He's an excellent actor, and I don't think he's gotten the general acclaim he deserves. Going back to Urinetown, in addition to Jordan Fisher, Keala Settle and Greg Hildreth also missed at least one show. I don't recall a prior Encores show where more than one featured actor has called out during the run. There's a lot of stuff going around. |
