The Financial Times has a deep dive into the economics of producing on the West End versus Broadway. TLDR: Per Cameron Mackintosh, “The real problem in America is that the cost of running a show has escalated beyond all reason. Some of the large-scale shows that would have broken even at $700,000 a week pre-Covid now require more than a million dollars per week to turn a profit." (While the link below will get you past the FT paywall I'm not sure how many people can access the article before its eligibility is used up. The FT is more strict than the WSJ or NYT.) |
