An interesting historic footnote

The chosen "jury" for the original production tried to get celebrities to serve. Also, at the time, women were not permitted to serve on juries in New York. (Laws were different from state to state -- as in "states rights.") But the production made exceptions for matinee performances. Astonishingly, it wasn't until a 1957 Federal law opened federal case juries to include women. And it wasn't until 1973 that all states passed laws permitting women to serve on juries. That has to be put into perspective. In Switzerland, for example, women didn't get the right to vote in national elections until 1971 and in local elections not completely until 1990.
