Did Ken Jennings pronounce Mrs. Mozart's name as cun-STAN-zee? It caught me off-guard. I've always said cun-STAN-zuh. With all due respect to Sir Ian, the clips I've seen of Paul Scofield in the original National Theatre production are riveting. (Was it Simon Callow and Felicity Kendal alongside him?) I saw that Old Vic revival with Suchet and Sheen but in London I don't believe David McCallum played the Emperor (I can't remember who did). And I saw the National revival with Lucian Msamati and Joshua McGuire, which featured the added treat of a full orchestra onstage (the London Sinfonietta?) but ultimately it didn't make a huge impression. I saw it in Canada at Stratford with Brian Bedford, who was superb. He was also a fantastic Martin Dysart in their production of Equus. I think a classical background helps in those plays. They have a very formal air about them. (Richard Griffiths' more casual, naturalistic approach as Dysart didn't grab me as much.) Now you got me thinking about Equus' impressive takeovers! I suppose Anthony Hopkins wasn't quite as iconic in 1974 as he later became but man those replacements: Douglas Campbell, Alec McCowen, Leonard Nimoy, Anthony Perkins and Richard Burton! |
