I saw Hopkins and Burton. The waning years of one legendary career vs. the waxing years of another. Of course it was a thrill to see Burton but Hopkins made more of an impression on me. I'm terribly sorry to have just missed him in M. Butterfly in London in '89 and Old Times here in NY around the same time.

I saw McKellan, Curry and Seymour in Amadeus. I would love to have seen Scofield, but it's hard to imagine him being any better.

It's true, we don't see stars of this caliber replacing each other very often anymore. Maybe Eileen Atkins for Cherry Jones in the original production of Doubt? But that's 20 years ago now.
