Wow. Well, now I really wish I'd seen the production. And what a cast.Yeah, Ben Hendrickson was a terrific actor. A few years ago, TCM showed a movie with a young McCallum as a pyromaniac who is also, IIRC, the leader of a gang of young thugs who terrorize a Liverpool housing complex. A juvenile delinquent, although McCallum was around 26 or 27 when it was filmed. Directed by Basil Dearden, Violent Playground. A good role for McCallum precisely because he did have that understated intellectual persona that could work very well for a role like that, casting against obvious type. It's funny you mention Heald because I almost mentioned in the earlier post. A while ago I read an interview with him. He was in some movie, or maybe something on television, with Hopkins, and he just loves the guy. Says he was wonderful to work with. So it may well be that my impression of Hopkins is wrong, but somehow there is just something I often don't like. But I like Heald so much that it's hard for me to think he's wrong. Oh, and Robin Bartlett. A great actress whom I wish we got to see more often onstage in New York. I am sorry that I missed her in a few things. Loved her so much long ago in Reckless and, more recently but also pretty long ago by now, in Everett Beekin. |
