Yes, but those were just nominations. Seldes did not win for Father's Day, as you note. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, a number of shows that ran only one performance got nominations when certain categories were weak. In the case of Seldes and Father's Day, the category was not weak. The play actually received a good number of favorable reviews, but the producers jumped the gun because of a negative Barnes review and closed it after one performance. Seldes's performance did receive high praise. Harder to explain except by noting that these were weak seasons in some categories are Geraldine Brooks's nomination for Brightower (one performance, Maya Angelou's nomination for Look Away (one performance), and Penelope Windust's nomination for Elizabeth I, which ran five performances. Just a bit earlier than this, Ming Cho Lee received a nomination for his highly praised sets for the one performance Billy! Just a tiny bit later, Doctor Jazz, which ran five performances and really was critically excoriated, nonetheless received nominations for leading actress in a musical (Lola Falana), costume design (Raoul Pené Du Bois) and choreography (Donald McKayle). Herbert Ross was nominated for his highly praised choreography for Anyone Can Whistle (nine performances). And back before nominations were announced and in the days when designers could be win for (and later be nominated for) multiple shows, Jo Mielziner won a Tony for scenic design for five productions, including Sleepy Hollow,. Admittedly, Mielziner also won for South Pacific. As late as 1965, Oliver Smith won the scenic design Tony for Baker Street, The Odd Couple and Luv. Back the main subject: Philip Bosco won for The Rape of the Belt in 1960, which ran nine performances. |
