That's always puzzled me, too: Falana gets Tony-nominated for ''Doctor Jazz'' (only 5 regular performances!) but NOT Stephanie Mills for ''The Wiz.'' WTF?

Granted, no one was beating Angela Lansbury (''Gypsy''), who won both the Tony & Drama Desk. But Mills also was Drama Desk-nominated; Falana wasn't.

It might be added that Bernadette Peters and Ann Reinking were Tony- and Drama Desk-nominated for their flop shows: ''Mack & Mabel,'' ''Goodtime Charley.''

Did Mills lose her Tony slot because her competitors were far better-known? Was it easier to overlook Mills because she was ''just'' a teenager? ''The Wiz'' was only her second Broadway show. She made her Broadway debut as a kid in ''Maggie Flynn'' (1968). (Awardswise, she won a Grammy for R&B in 1981.)

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of ''The Wiz.'' I hope the Tonys note the occasion and pay tribute to Mills (now 67), like have her give out Best Musical.
