Yes, she said that, and so did her husband and manager, Martin Melcher, but according to both Mike Nichols and the film's producer, Lawrence Turman, she was never offered the role or even particularly seriously considered for it. Turman sent the book to Melcher very early on, just looking for some feedback. It's possible that she was briefly considered as a possibility for the role. Every actress in Hollywood over 35 seem to have been on an early list of possibilities. Nichols said that the only role he ever thought about her for was Mrs. Braddock, Benjamin's mother.

This is from a letter Turman sent to the Los Angeles Times after the paper said in an article that Day and Robert Redford were offered the roles:

"I, as producer, sent the novel early on to Day's husband-manager for a reaction, not an offer (I don't recall that I even told Mike Nichols I was doing so). He, Marty Melcher, hated the book, so he never passed it along to her. The first, and only, actors offered the Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson roles were Dustin and Annie."

Nichols said that although he spoke to a couple of other actresses about the role, he knew from the beginning that he wanted Bancroft for it.
