Here we go again. The remark Sondheim made about Hammerstein in comparing him to Rodgers is not one I would ever call "cutting."(And this was long after Hammerstein's death.)Sondheim simply said his mentor had a finite talent. But he added that unlike Rodgers, whose talent was infinite, Hammerstein's humanity was infinite. The "cutting" remark was about Rodgers having finite humanity. Finding fault with someone's work--even your mentor's--only means you can be objective. Hammerstein had a huge opus. Surely no one could claim that everything was without defect.
