But Sondheim was criticizing Hammerstein's work as a lyricist, i.e. The Sound of Music's "like a lark that is learning to pray" among others.
On the other hand, he didn't come in for the drubbing Hart, Noel Coward and Ira Gershwin got for their lyrics.
He was, of course, entitled to his opinions, but going public on Oscar H. struck me as particularly un-called for considering his "debt" to him. |
