Well, Sondheim was only human as we all are, and none of us are perfect. We all say things we probably should have just kept private, and then again, there's no rule that we have to treat anyone influential in our lives as saints. We're all complex beings, and all the shouldn't/needn't in the world doesn't prevent us from being complex in difficult ways as well as wonderful ways.
