EMPIRE at New World Stages

Another original musical coming to New York via New World Stages bites the dust. HARD. What is it about New World Stages that practically attracts failure? Each of the four or so shows I've seen in the past year range from terrible-to-mediocre (and all comped). Whoever is producing/GMing this is papering it heavily, hence taking the leap to watch last night's performance. Reviews are harsh, so I had no expectation of anything good ... and yet, wow, do they still manage to surprise in sheer ineptitude. Everything about this is such a slog -- the basic story elements are almost nonexistent, some of the talent is WILDLY BAD (lead performers who have no right to be put on any stage, let alone a professional one), set design is fine but poorly utilized, the muddled and weak sound design essentially undermines anything else left standing.

Go if you want to see a trainwreck, with the built-in assumption that you'll want to leave at intermission. It's a looooooong first act, by the way.

I'm linking to Sara Holdren's review -- she puts it much better than I can (it's a more fun read than actually watching the show).
