I completely agree with your assessment. I think keeping "Hills of Tomorrow" and bookending with the graduations adds to the depth of the show. Can't they just have younger actors playing the high school students and adults playing the rest or would that be even more confusing for some people?

"Rich and Happy" is lyrically superior to "That Frank". No question there. The only addition I've truly loved in the later productions is "Growing Up". It's a beautiful song that shows more reflection in the character of Frank.

While I enjoyed this revival, I still don't think it's the best version of Merrily. Even though the three main actors had wonderful chemistry and the rest of the cast was uniformly great, I did not understand where the closeness of their relationships came or developed from. To me, that part felt rushed and the show didn't have as much emotional power as it could have. Surprisingly, I was not moved by this production. I am always moved when listening to the original cast recording and when I watch the video of the concert (that kept "Hills of Tomorrow" and "Rich and Happy" and included "Growing Up") with most of the original cast. Maybe that comes from nostalgia. I don't know.

I will end on a more positive note and say that one of the major plusses in this revival was Daniel Radcliffe's "Franklin Shepard, Inc." All other versions I've heard or seen make me think Charley was having a nervous breakdown and going crazy. This production made me see that that wasn't the case and Charley is simply angry, frustrated and disappointed with his friend.

Take care,
Jason
