| ''Franklin Shepard Inc.'' is usually played as Charley's comic nervous breakdown, but Maria Friedman said she saw more to it, at a discussion with Jonathan Groff at the 92nd Street Y. Groff said: ''That was a huge moment of revelation when you said to Dan and I that 'Franklin Shepard Inc.' is a love song.'' Friedman continued: ''It's the greatest love song. ... It's a man saying, 'Look at me. I LOVE you! I LOVE you!'' Groff quoted the lyric: ''That's the guy I love.'' As played by Radcliffe, Charley is making one last desperate attempt to rescue his deep relationship with Frank. And it was electric watching Groff (as Frank) trying to keep his cool during the song, and then unleash his own torrent of hurt and humiliation, feeling betrayed by his BFF. So happy they both won Tonys! |
