My opinion on other Charley's takes on "Franklin Shepard, Inc." comes from all the cast recordings and the filmed London revival in 2012/2013. To me, they all seem to be having a nervous breakdown. Speaking of the filmed London revival, while I think Ann Morrison is untouchable as Mary (I'll never understand why she didn't became a huge Broadway star), I actually liked Jenna Russell better than Lindsay Mendez.

I think the new Broadway revival cast recording falls short on some of the performances. Not that you need me to validate your opinion, but I agree about Radcliffe's "Franklin Shepard, Inc." on the recording. I listened to the recording before seeing the show and thought his take was a bit dull. I felt different after seeing his performance in the theater. Don't get me started on ridiculous ticket prices. I'm part of the problem though since I have paid them.

I know a lot of people went to this revival for the three leads, but I'm surprised it closed. I think it could have easily been recast and run longer. IMHO, Merrily is much easier to cast than Sweeney Todd.

Not to change the subject, but I will fight anyone that says that the original Merrily failed because they used very young people in the show. Those young people are an insanely talented bunch. Just look at some of their credits now. While it may be comparing strawberries to chocolate covered strawberries, I liken it to the original Toronto cast of Godspell. You had Ann Morrison, Lonny Price, Jim Walton, Jason Alexander, Liz Callaway, David Loud, Giancarlo Esposito, Tonya Pinkins and Daisy Prince just to name a few. Not too shabby. :-)

Take care,
Jason
