I think (apologies if this point has already been made in this thread and I missed it) audiences soured on the story because DEH had actually moved the needle of public opinion. Evan Hansen's newly found attention was based on a lie about, of all topics, a person who had died by suicide. In the years between the stage debut and the movie opening, I think audiences and movie reviewers had come to find that very distasteful, not sympathy-inducing.
