Charles Busch: Theater Hall of Fame inductee?!

This sham is due to cronyism. The institution’s parameters are:

“To be eligible for induction, the theater professional must have given 25 years distinguished service to the American Theater and, at least, five major production credits on Broadway.”

Charles Busch has TWO Broadway credits; for writing the hit play The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, and for writing the book of the flop musical Taboo. Those are all, he has never performed on Broadway.

Yes, Busch has had a long and distinguished Off-Broadway career creating several minor campy vehicles showcasing himself. He has previously been lauded by several appropriate bodies for this achievement. His inclusion into the Theater Hall of Fame is dubious. This is a case of a fringe figure beloved by the right people receiving undeserved entree into an artificial pantheon. When the legend becomes the fact, print the legend.

Charles’s Busch’s name will be carved onto a wall of the Gershwin Theatre, along with Katharine Cornell, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, et al. Good for him; whether Wicked attendees will notice is beside the point.
