"Bette Midler" brings people in; "Will Brill"- even with a Tony- doesn't have quite the same draw.

I imagine that for an unknown play by a little-known writer with a cast of (largely) unknown theatre types, the producers would've attempted to sign everyone for minimum. But the cast must have realized that replacing any one of them would have been tough and highly damaging to a show whose greatest strength is the ensemble work they all contribute to.

I wouldn't think the investors regarded the transfer as a sure thing. Even as someone who follows these things, I wasn't really aware of it at Playwrights Horizons and if it hadn't gotten the Times rave and the Tony nominations record, I'm not sure we'd be talking about it as a "hit".
