More Tony broadcast thoughts

So, the wedding reception I went to last night was fabulous. Two bands (with many friends/colleagues in both) - a steel drum band and then a 16 piece big band - and of course good food, drink, and company. But I mention the bands because then I got home and watched the CBS portion of the Tonys (no apostrophe lol) on DVR, and well, the wedding entertainment won, hands down.

The musical number medleys, as others have said, were at times so mish-mashed that I couldn't get any sense of the show itself. I really didn't know what I was watching during Hell's Kitchen, Elephants, The Outsiders...even Tommy was a jumble to me. For all the controversy about whether Stereophonic should perform, I thought that song was very weak tea. I was disappointed that I didn't think Suffs came off well either. (Does anyone remember the episode of Maude where the women of Tuckahoe are putting on an amateur bicentennial revue? I was reminded of that. In Maude, though, it was funny.) However, Illinoise did grab my attention. I don't know if I'll get to see it, but based on what the broadcast showed us, that was the only new show I would be interested in.

I think I liked "Old Friends" better when I saw the show onstage (but they still did well) - but what really got me was the awkward cut in the middle. How come Hell's Kitchen got to lumber on and on (it felt very long) but Merrily couldn't do their full song? And I'm sorry, but I was under the impression that Eddie Redmayne was a good actor. That embarrassing caricature of god-knows-what he did last night makes me wonder. I love Cabaret. I don't know what that was last night, but it didn't seem to be Cabaret. Maybe a copy of a copy of a copy of Cabaret?

Speaking of Sweet Charity, the idea of the Chita tribute was great, but it seemed rather rushed and haphazard.

I was good about not checking news during the wedding reception. But I did see one facebook comment from a friend - "The Tonys opening number is specifically crafted so you can't understand a word." When I got home to watch the number, I had to agree. Was DeBose doing her best Patti Lupone? And what a disappointing number in general. I seem to recall I enjoyed DeBose on the last two Tony broadcasts. Tonight I really didn't at all. I remember that year they had squeaky Rachel Bloom doing very annoying pre-commercial backstage banter, and every time she came on I would think "ugh - not hoer again..." - I have to say that was how I felt about DeBose last night. A little went a very long way.

What was the bit with the football guys? I mean, I don't mind that they were there - I think it might be nice to see more non-industry theatre lovers involved in the show. But from what I could tell, they were there just because they happened to see Stereophonic? Odd.

It would have been fun to see Rannells and Gad do something from Gutenberg. But their routine in place of that was pretty fun. Yay.

I would have to go through the speeches again to comment on more of them, but Jonathan Groff seemed particularly heartfelt. His wasn't the only one by far, but he sticks out in my mind as I write this.

But, really, I take no pleasure in saying that all in all this felt like the weakest Tony broadcast in a long time.
