I agree and it all felt so CHEAP, too...

...one of the worst staged Tonys in memory. Very few of the performances were impactful to me. I KNOW there was talent on that stage, but the way so many of those performances were staged, excerpted and filmed felt like a disservice to the performers and the productions. Virtually everything felt 'off' about that this year's performances. And I include that dreadful opening number. That may be the worst Tony openings I've seen in my lifetime? Cheap, joyless, humorless, lifeless.

Re: Suffs. I will say, I had zero familiarity with the show before. Yes, I found the staging painfully amateurish -- almost an unintentional parody of musical theatre. Hard to believe staging that plain stupid made it to Broadway. But, I will say, the little I heard of the score was appealing. Not so much the rather insipid lyrics, but, again, from the little I heard, it does seem like Shaina Taub has an interesting and subtly plaintive melodic and harmonic gift.
