There's that kind of preference for awards for drama over comedy that affects some folks when considering what is better. "West Side Story", while an excellent show, is based on "Romeo and Juliet" and is certainly a fine juxtaposition of that story into then-contemporary times set amongst rival gangs in the inner city. "The Music Man" is a totally original story of redemption through love of a con man amongst Americana set in the mid-West with intentional at times corniness and its American as Apple pie being both celebrated and gently mocked through and by its characters and its still rather ingenious score. I'm sorry that Chita Rivera, who I'm sure was fantastic as Anita in "West Side Story" would say in interviews with a bit of verbal side eye that she couldn't believe "The Music Man" won over her show, but she was too close to it. "The Music Man" as originally written, and the fine original film captures almost as perfectly, was a bigger hit that year and a total original. Meredith Willson, Onna White and Morton DaCosta's work for that is it is just as masterful as that of Bernstein/Sondheim/Laurents/Robbins. Then again, more recent productions have screwed around with both.
