While "The Music Man" might have a similar con man and disbelief by a leading woman in common, and Willson had been working on his show for many years prior to "The Rainmaker" being produced, "Music Man" was a hit musical before the other's musicalization "110 in the Shade" was done. "The Music Man" 's use of music cornpone Americana was deemed to be quite original at the time, not only in its lack of specific book source, but in its rather sophisticated use of counterpoint and using different tempos to introduce two different songs which were revealed be the same song linking the two lovers finally. Also the use of speak-sing rhythmically, of which Robert Preston and the "Rock Island" men's diction while doing what amounts to early rap, was a lot more understandable than that of Kendrick Lamar during the Super Bowl half-time show.
