Hey, i love MM, and you don't have to tell me why it's original in how the music is written, or that it wasn't adapted from another play or novel (certainly not the first but it's never that common for a Broadway musical to not be adapted from something). Whether or not Willson could have been influenced in any way by The Rainmaker isn't really the point for me. There is no denying how similar they are in premise and plot and theme, even if they had no awareness of each other. But if another writer is creating a similar story at the same basic time, it's hard to sing about how original it is. Yes, if Willson concocted it all on his own from nothing, it's original, but it won't actually feel original when it's produced if another play does that same original thing around the same time. I guess it's bad luck of timing. It doesn't change how exceptional The Music Man is. Though I actually do not think that our modern day understanding of what rap music is or sounds like has all that much to do with what the gentlemen of "Rock Island" were asked to do vocally, whether you love modern rap or Kendrick or not. |
