While I completely agree that the vigor of the stage show was missing from the film (where was Elphaba’s on-the-edge fire? Where Morrible’s majesty? Where the sense of urgency?), it was ok, if mild. But casting the self-absorbed, unctuous, condescending persona of Goldblum in the Frank Morgan/Joel Grey role was a big mistake. The Wizard is meant to be much more disarming (and therefore more horrifying for that facade). I wish they’d given the role to Norbert Leo Butz or Danny Burstein. Someone you’d never believe to be a terrible tyrant. Martin Short. Of course, there’s always Ben Kingsley, who can do any and everything. Or Danny DeVito. |
