That is where you lose me. The Wizard is not meant to be anything other than how they choose to portray him. Personally, I found playing the wizard more like a Frank Morgan bufuddled kindly old man completely wrong for the musical. With Joel Grey not only did I never believe he could be a terrible tyrant - I still never believed it by the end of the show because of how he's been portrayed. I think the Wizard is a much more intentionally malevolent character seeking to get power and that needs to be at least just under the surface right off the bat. I think you need to see the con man and the calculation and manipulation a lot more. I completely disagree that he needs to be "disarming". Goldblum I think has a perfect balance of keeping you a bit off balance. |
