| When I was in high school in Ft. Wayne Indiana I discovered the Sweeney Tood cast album and fell in love with the show. I saw the tour was coming to town and got tickets. Had NO clue who June Havoc was at that time but still remember the show and her performance since it was my first touring production after having only attended a few local community theatre productions. June was warm yet cunning in the role, with a singing voice that worked well for the material. I'd only heard Lansbury on the cast album at that time, don't think I saw the Tony award performance, and don't recall feeling that Havoc had delivered any less of a refined, layered performance than Angela and that she sang the songs with as much gusto and drive as Lansbury did. I don't remember the exact month I saw the show but I'm fairly certain it was in the winter of 1981/1982 and when I graduated in May 82 and went to Indiana University in Bloomington that August I saw a old ad somewhere for the Broadway shows they had coming to the auditorium on campus and saw that Sweeney with Havoc was on the list but subsequentally cancelled. I guess the tour didn't sell well so they cancelled the 82/83 dates? |
