A very spare production. Mostly an empty stage. No set pieces. No scenery. A few costumes. Minimal staging. Very abbreviated book. 5 pc 'orchestra' Very good singing, both individual and choral. Notable Alvin Crawford as Joe (Paul Robeson role) Cast of 10 requires too much doubling. Some good acting. Like a very low-budget (threadbare) Encores! production. The score shines. Best if you already know the story. (It helped that I recently watched the film) |
