I found it conceptually very similar to the current SUNSET BLVD. revival: a "deconstruction" with no set, plainclothes or otherwise atypical (for the time & place) costumes, actors often speaking either affectless or in an exaggerated/deliberately overacted manner. And, as you said, it helps if you already know the story - which also is true, I'd say, for the SUNSET BLVD. revival. Agree that the singing and score are the standouts in this SHOW/BOAT. Overall I liked it. I think the creators (deconstructors/reimaginers?) could have leaned even more heavily into the idea that this work long heralded as so progressive may not seem that way to nonwhites. Like, if the actors were wearing the "WHITE" sashes from Act 1 in the second act, it would emphasize how the black characters disappear for a huge chunk of the show. |
