It's such an interesting point about Bancroft being made here, especially in light of the many times she was cast over actors who created key roles on Broadway. In just about every case she didn't top the originators: Lee Grant in "The Prisoner of Second Avenue," Carole Shelley in "The Elephant Man," Geraldine Page in "Agnes of God," Anne Pitoniak in "'Night, Mother," Ellen Burstyn in "84 Charing Cross Road," and Estelle Getty in "Torch Song Trilogy."
