Speaking of the playwright, I assume you're referring to Bernard Pomerance, who won a 1979 Tony for Best Play for his ''The Elephant Man,''' starring Philip Anglim as John Merrick - not to be confused with the 1980 David Lynch movie, starring John Hurt (and Anne Bancroft!). To bring my original post in this thread full-circle, there is a 1982 ABC-TV version of Pomerance's ''The Elephant Man,'' which earned Anglim an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination.

I had the fortune to interview Anglim back in 1980 when the Bay Area-born native brought ''The Elephant Man'' home to San Francisco. He was a gifted, shrewd and strapping young actor who optioned Pomerance's play in London. He starred in it when it opened Off-Broadway and then landed at the Booth on Broadway. And it put him on the map, as Anglim received a Tony nomination and Theatre World Award, and won a Drama Desk Award and an Obie. Bravo!
