The structural problem in the DNA of the material makes it hard to musicalize: Miranda is a force of antagonism in Andy’s story, and Andy isn’t substantial enough to earn our investment. Miranda is our interest. So we wait for her to drop obstacles in front a character without a strong enough musical theater arc. No wonder she was hard to assign music. It’s Les Miz with Javert more compelling. Is it adjustable? The West End reviews suggest it’s not. The audience awaits the story of the ostensible villain. It leaves the whole story circumstantial. Just my take. | |
