Fagin is the lead in Oliver. DWP is like Wall St. The interesting character is the villain - Miranda and Gordon Gekko. And in the latter the Charlie Sheen character (I can't remember his name to establish my point)is a cipher. The problem is not structural but creative. Since every musical is unique and there are no rules, DWP could be a successful musical with new book, music and lyrics. I agree there is here what they called in the BMI workshop the Ben Franklin problem. There was a show being written about Franklin's son, but every time Ben appeared he exited with the show under his arm. Still it contained a great song I Won't Mind recorded both by Victoria Clark and by Audra McDonald. Maybe, the problem there was we knew Ben when we walked into the theatre. I guess my conclusion is this: what's missing or wrong in the movie that requires it become a musical? Nothing. There I agree. Mary Rodgers called such shows 'why' musicals and she was not shy about saying so. |
