Many shows do very well at regional theatres, and die cruel deaths on Broadway. Just within NY we have had title of show, passing strange, a strange loop, bloody bloody andrew jackson, days of wine and roses, caroline or change. The loved honeymoon in vegas at Paper Mill. The Notebook seemed OK in Chicgao. Yeah, authors will make some bucks from the regions on SWEPT AWAY -(though few theatres want to produce Broadway flops). But for the producers & investors, no number of regional productions will make up the $15-20 million + (I don't recall the cap on this show) that they lost on Broadway. Why was SWEPT AWAY a flop? Word of mouth in NY was not good; the Avett Brothers are not huge; the subject matter doesn't interest ticket buyers. The title and show art were not appealing. There were no bankable stars. |
