It’s a dismal production. I understand the choices made now from previous posts a few days ago that the dancing, costumes and other aspects was designed around the actress and not the character. I guess there isn’t much difference creating a role for an actress (like shows were done decades ago) compared to changing a show for an actress. But as something that knew nothing about this actress (and I assume a large portion or the older audience doesn’t), this production is baffling. I hope it doesn’t get much tony recognition but I’ve learned this year in the presidential election that I’m the minority voice.

As for Gypsy, I’m glad it’s traditional—ish. I think some of the casting (black boys replaced by white teenagers) goes against the idea that this is a color blind casted show. But not every revival has to be rethought and transformed. It’s nice to adhere to a classic with a star.
