What always struck me about "Think of Me" is that until the tacked on coloratura at the end of it, it's a very easy sing in a relatively limited range, certainly for a soprano. It just doesn't sound like a big showcase aria for a diva to make a splash in; something on the level of the "Jewel Song" from "Faust" (which is what was the starting point for Leonard Bernstein to write "Glitter and Be Gay") might have been more appropriate. But then again, ALW was writing this for Sarah Brightman to sing 6x a week (she didn't do matinees), and it was about all she could handle in the overall demands of the whole role I guess. But then again, something like "O mio babbino caro" is short, sweet and an effective show-stopper for a light lyric soprano, but of course, Puccini was an operatic genius. "Think of Me" is just something to sit through to plot-wise to establish Christine's role. |
