I couldn’t have said it better myself. What eloquence! Audra is a revelation. And I mean it. She really does understand Rose. And, as a result, we do, too. Perhaps for the very first time. Every line has meaning. When Audra’s Rose says “Watch this! It’s a train!”, it’s more than the usual laugh. There’s a desperation I’ve never seen before. It’s so subtle, but it’s there and it was surprising and in line with what we know it’s all about. Audra never strays, never plays it safe. She’s honest. She’s present. Her Rose is not demented or wild-eyed. No maniacal laughing. Just honesty. I just can’t rave enough. It is easily one of the finest performances I have ever seen. An absolutely perfect night in the theatre. Without the projections and, ironically, any gimmicks. There are so many examples of this, it’s remarkable. Audra’s Rose isn’t just steamroller. She’s delicate, sexy, manipulative, nuanced, emotional, tragic, warped, misguided, and a complete revelation. I was there on 11/21 and will head back mid-January. There are showier performances this season. But none so honest and moving as Audra’s. This production doesn’t need projections or, ironically enough, gimmicks. |
