| Gypsy - Thursday 12/12/24 Audra McDonald is doing something really extraordinary here. Her performance is layered, nuanced and beautifully calibrated. A true work of art. She gives us an emotional strip tease. We get to know Rose slowly. At the top of the show she’s well-defended, and by the act I closer the cracks in her armor are starting to show. She reveals more and more until she’s completely exposed, nerves raw, by the time she tackles Rose’s Turn. It’s a searing performance and the best acted Rose’s Turn I’ve ever seen. I didn’t just watch it, I felt it. It left me shook. It was sad and tragic and intense all at once. Audra is fully in control of this performance and living inside this character. She is Rose - in all her glorious complexity. Are there issues with where the score sits in her voice - on the border of her chest voice and her head voice? Honestly, her performance is so well crafted it didn’t bother me. I was somewhat conscious of it early in the show but didn’t notice it at all by the time we got to Everything’s Coming Up Roses, and I began to realize the power and depth of her characterization. Audra demonstrates once again why she is our finest working musical theater performer. She deserves all her flowers. And then some. And still more if that’s possible. I know I’m gushing now. Forgive me. But this performance was something special. Danny Burstein is a terrific Herbie. Probably the best Herbie I’ve seen. Joy Woods (Louise), Jordan Tyson (June), Lesli Margherita (Tessie Tura), Mylinda Hull (Electra), Lili Thomas (Mazeppa), and Kevin Csolak (Tulsa) are also excellent. I liked the old fashioned feel of the show. Minimal electronics. Scenery (moved by actual people) rather than projections. A full orchestra. The overture. The entr’acte. Loved it. Loved every second of it. I can’t wait to see it again. |
