| Stay tuned! I saw Daly and Lupone. They played Rose like a steamroller. I was exhausted by intermission. I saw Peters 3 or 4 times. Her performance continued to grow throughout the run. She was a magnificent Rose. Fundamentally human. She was exquisite. Truly. I was riveted. Audra was — well, I’ve already said. She was astonishing. Looking forward to seeing her again. I had a few minor quibbles. I missed the wailing horn in the overture. I thought Uncle Jocko was third rate. And, a stuffed lamb? Felt cheap. I missed the “ugly sister” line, wished the Minsky’s number was less sophisticated. There were tech issues and a few lost lines/laughs. But, it was the first preview. I know every line of the show. I know it better than any other show. They managed to surprise, wow, and thrill. All the praise heaped on Audra is deserved — it’s the best acted Rose I’ve ever seen. But, she’s also giving very, very funny performance. Audra isn’t known for her comic chops, so I was beyond delighted. |
