Her interview reinforced things that I’ve heard about her over the years. She is a passionate producer who is also incredibly controlling and merciless in how she treats creatives. She is definitely from a generation of feminism that essentially says women should be able to act like a-holes the same as men do, which just creates more toxicity in the world (I spent many years working for a similar, though far less successful, boss).

In terms of her defensiveness about her tenure, I think that reflects a very American way of seeing the arts. Theaters in this country are created by the people who run them, not so much for the public and the public good. Whether one supports that idea is ultimately a political question; I am of the camp that says artistic turnover is healthy for our culture, especially in an age where it is significantly harder to turn a small nonprofit into the kind of giant of MTC or Second Stage. The only major new stages for nonprofit theaters in NYC have been built by and for existing nonprofits, such as LCT 3 or the Polonsky, which I think points to a barrier for access for younger theaters to make their mark. Are Nova is really the only nonprofit I can think of that Was founded in the 21st century and has built a permanent Manhattan residence.

From that perspective, it would have been great if Rothman at all had left their posts sooner. But producing in America is a capitalist game, and Rothman is right that she and Meadows and a few others have been winning at capitalism, hough it would be great if she pointed out that a lot of these programming choices are championed by members of an artistic staff, and not solely the head of a theater.
