I am kinda late to your thread and I don't want to tell tales out of school, but I (and I assume quite a few others) learned something by watching the most recent chapter of Joe Biden's story, and I think it informs this one. I think it is hard for many people to retire, and even worse to be retired. There is a lot of resentment, but eventually strong people find peace in the notion of what is best for whatever one essentially donated their lives to. I also think hard-nosed people find it harder to accept the conclusions of hard-nosed people. (And in that way, I think Carole can perhaps be distinguished from Joe. For her sake, I hope she finds peace in the conclusion of this chapter. At the same time, I think there are classy and unclassy ways of handling things like this from the perspective of the active voices. I don't know what exactly went down, or what the prompts were. We see other situations that are at least superficially similar where founders leave on their own terms, at least publicly. Whatever the cause and reason, that was not going to happen here. Some enjoy an honorific (and not absolute) departure: quite a number become emeritae. For whatever reasons, again, that is not going to happen here.
