I don't understand some theatres

Why are some theatres that house plays, musicals, opera, etc, so gigantic? Isn't the point of theatre to see it?

Sitting anywhere other than the Orchestra and Front Mezzanine at City Center make the stage seem so far, far away. I believe 1/4th of the Metropolitan Opera is obstructed view seating. Why are there even balconies above Mezz level in any theatre?

I assume the point is to fit in as many people as possible, at different price points. Are people satisfied seeing shows from seemingly miles away?

Many catch-all theatres around the country that touring productions play in are even worse--they're monstrous barns.
