I was told that old opera houses were where one went to be seen as much as to see a performance, ergo all the boxes. (I don't think Bertha cares anything about any opera she is at in The Gilded Age; she just wants to be seen by the old money people.)

Some theaters like the Broadway and the Hellinger were movie palaces, so you could be far away and still see a show.

Others like the New Amsterdam and the Lyceum have that extra level so poor people could see it...the cheap seats.

City Center was meant to accommodate all kinds of arts and have a lot of people in there has the most problems. I don't mind the front of the balcony, but I hate hate hate the back of its mezzanine.

I am glad for places like the Booth, The Plymouth, Music Box etc. But for the right show, I'll suffer the Gershwin--a barn--and I have suffered the Uris.)
